So many choices, which one should you pick!? Be sure to check out this week’s episode of Katie’s Corner over on YouTube for a visual breakdown to really drive this point home!

This is a question I get ALL the time! Which probiotic is best?
It’s a great question, and I completely empathize with where the confusion comes from.
With endless options everywhere you look it can feel overwhelming, but have no fear! Let’s break down 3 big things to look for when choosing a probiotic supplement:
1. Bacterial Genus
When you look at the back of a supplement label, you’ll notice a big grid labeled “Supplement Facts”. This functions similar to a Nutrition Facts Panel on a food label, as it is meant to list out the actual composition of that particular supplement.
This panel is where you’ll be able to find which bacteria are actually present in the probiotic. As you take a closer look, you’ll notice the bacteria listed will have 2 words. The first word you see is the genus of the bug.
2 super beneficial bacterial genuses that have been linked to numerous health benefits are:
Be on the lookout for these little gems in your probiotic supplement!
2. Bacterial Species
If the first word is the bacterial genus, then the second word is the species within that genus.
Let's take a look at some pups for comparison:
If “Canis” is the genus (where the word canine comes from, fun fact!), then Wolf, Dog, and Fox would be a “species” within that genus. Think of your Microbes like this. If Lactobacillus is the genus, then L. Rhamnosus and L. Acidophilus would be two different species within that same genus.
And the key to species is diversity:
Our gut loves a full, vibrant, multi-faceted ecosystem. Always be sure to consult with your medical provider, but as a general rule of thumb the more diverse your probiotic species are the better!
3. Additional Ingredients
This is a biggie! If you’ve been around for a while you’ve heard me preach about this before, and it holds just a true here as with food.
ALWAYS. READ. THE. INGREDIENTS.
The “Additional Ingredients” listed on any probiotic supplement should be as minimal as possible. There are of course unavoidably going to be additional ingredients required to physically make a capsule for instance, but if you have a laundry list of additional ingredients with hardly any bacteria present then that’s a huge red flag!
Starting to get the hang of this but feel like a visual aid might help? Look no further! This is exactly what we’re diving into over on YouTube this week. Go check it out now! You'll even find a bonus tip laid out for you at the end.
